Roderick McKenzie

Saturday November 3rd, a beautiful mild sunny day, saw some 35 members of Taff Ely Ramblers walking from Tonyrefail to a bench overlooking Y Waun Goch (known locally as 'the Battlefield') to fix a plaque in memory of 'Rod' - Roderick McKenzie - who had sadly died in March aged 72.

The group was accompanied by many of Rod's family:- his sister, his daughters, his son, and their partners; also his grand and great grandchildren, along with a number of his bowling and social friends from Tonyrefail.

The occasion, though sad, was a celebration of the many ways by which Rod had contributed to the club; in the first place the many walks he had lead and above all the way in which he uniquely made every walk a social occasion.

Full of life he was always eager to experience all types of walks and assessed them with candour and humour. During the walks he mixed with all and entertained with his stories and jokes.

He was always willing to do a good turn and went out of his way to help a number of his walking companions. He enriched the lives of all of us and during our walks we often refer to amusing incidents which still link us closely to Rod.

He would have loved this occasion and when thinking of Rod the words of John Donne take on a real meaning - 'Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.'

The occasion was crowned by a toast to Rod, proposed by our Chairperson Daphne Little, and the walk around Tylcha hill, which was one of Rod's favourites, completed the event.
